This Is How Awesome I am.

The title of this beauty is all Janae‘s fault.

You see, in her post yesterday, she talked about how she recovers from her long run/work days (or long days void of any hard running or working). After noting she likes to get in pajamas, leave her hair a mess, eat cookies, and watch marathons of not-so-popular TV (sorry, Janae, you’re still my hero, and I’m still mildly obsessed with you, but I don’t know anyone else who watches “Make It Or Break It”) ;), she asked what I did to recover.

Welp…

I was being completely facetious, but she just straight up told me she’d hunt me down if I didn’t do a post about how awesome I am.

…or something like that.

So… how do I recover from a tiring day?Β

1. I run a lot.
KNOCK ON WOOD, my shin is recuperating well with all my special stretches from physical therapy. Booo-yah! So, this week started the lax part of MARATHON training. That still sounds weird without the “half” in front of it.

So, I’ve joined a new gym (with Jamie! fist pump!), and I’m loving the change of scenery. Even if the treadmill has a very ill-placed bar in front of my face. Good thing Jamie’s cute. I’ll just rip her headphones out every day and make her talk to me.

2. Lotsa painting.
Since Colleen’s bridal party glasses are done and in her hands, I’ve completed a makeup artist glass for my friend Alyssa (a girl who was clearly blessed by the great-name fairy).

Trust Sandra. She’s a Makeup Artist.

3. Get really motivated to do laundry,
throw the clothes in the washer, switch them to the dryer, and leave them there. Cause folding sucks and I hate it.

4. Buy the best color asics…ever… online.
‘Cause apparently, when you’re training for a half marathon, you need TWO pairs of running shoes.

Free shipping at Zappos, whatwhaat!

Elite Runners must all be rich. This is a stupid expensive hobby.

But I’m not complaining, because I found the best color Asics on the planet. Remember these? Obsessed much?

5. Extend my online shopping problem to Victoria’s Secret
and buy things I’ve been swooning over since last September.

See that? It’s mine.

Apparently, Victoria’s little secret has eluded me, ’causeΒ I return on a quest for more entirely too often.

6. I sift through and delete really fantastic Facebook messages
from strangers who can’t even view my profile.

MAN.. cuter than a koala bear? I’m swooning again.

You’re welcome for sharing that with you.

7. And just as I told Janae, I like to grab my bender ball for a nice ab workout.
Sometimes I bang it out in 15 minutes, sometimes I lay there with the ball propping my head up. Ya win some, ya lose some.

That’s how I roll.

I’ll leave you with this.
Cause Chloe wants you to go “like” the new Life of bLyss Facebook page. πŸ˜‰

Sun Days > Snow Days

Guess who got the day off work yesterday?!

“MEEEEEEEE!”

That’s right. It was me. I know you’re sinfully jealous… don’t hate.

You see, Virginia Beach had a sicknasty storm on Tuesday that knocked out all the power at the school where I work. So, I got a call around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning telling me school offices were closed and I had the day off.

Fist pump!

This is why Sun Days are so much better than Snow Days.

From the comfort of my very own backyard, I can get a tan…

Read a good book…

And be super productive in the bLyss Designs department!

Hey, Colleen, the glasses for your bridal party are aaaalmost finished!

Royal blue and yellow with polka dots was Colleen’s request.
I made them all a little different from one another. πŸ™‚

Three cheers for productivity! In the sun!

And check out my awesome view. The concrete in my driveway and back patio was dug up and is getting replaced, but in the meantime, I’ve got enough slop at my back door to have a nice mud wrestling tournament.

[And hey, that is not an activity planned for my Memorial Day backyard bash, friends… don’t get your hopes up.]

And wanna know why I find it semi-pointless to photograph and report my eats on the blog?

Here’s my greek yogurt parfait.

In it? Fage 0% greek yogurt, honey, frozen mangoes and raspberries chopped in the blender, and Special K granola (obsessed).

Now, here’s the greek yogurt parfait served in the fashion that tastes way better.

See? It’s ugly.

And it tastes better that way.

So, there’s why I don’t photograph my eats and write ’em on on here all the time. Thank me later for not making you look at my egg scrambles, black bean soups, and tuna and chicken salad all the time.

What else did I accomplish other than glass painting and video editing on my day off?

Williamsburg Run for the Dream Race picture-finding!

Post-finish and soo happy about it

Apparently, I angrily march to the finish. Hi ho, hi ho!

“Alyssa, did you just fist pump for a picture?
Or are you flexing? Way to advertize your Jersey roots.”

It’s a shame I forgot to look happy, huh?

I’m also STILLSTILLSTILL struggling to figure out how to download the darned WordPress.org. I just want some stinkin’ plug-ins, and I’m getting overly frustrated. Who wants to do it for me? prshwahblaugh!

What did you get done in your last super-productive day?

What are your Memorial Day planskis?

Sound it out: Bijuju.

Bijuju. Pronounced “Bee-zhu-zhu.” Aren’t you glad I spell everything out phonetically? You’re welcome.

A fantastic accessory boutique. If you’re in need of jewelry, watches, scarves, handbags, etc., check out the online shop. I went a little nuts at the outlets over Easter break, and I walked away with some fantastic little additions to my wardrobe.

Like this…

Mine’s a darker purpley-gray color, but I fell in love with this sucker. I rarely even carry purses anymore.. I’m a wristlet girl. πŸ˜‰

I got these in aΒ  cream/pale blue theme, but you get the picture. I’m a big fan of wearing two or three at a time.

Aaand my favorites. I have a big thing for birdies, as evidenced by something else I recently purchased..

forgive me. there’s no great angle for photographing a mirror hook.

A mirrored birdie hook. For me to hang my jeeewelry. Only $8 at a little shop in Salisbury, North Carolina. I’m gaga over it. Yup.

Speaking of my thing for birdies, I finally painted myself a wine glass! Is it weird that I’ve been so busy painting creations for everyone else, I’ve never painted my own?

dear flash. you’re killin’ me.

It’s hard to see how awesome this is with the poor photo quality in my poorly-lit room, but this baby will be making an appearance with me at Wine Fest in two weekends. Yes, that’s a birdie, yes, it’s yellow, and YES, there’s glitter on it. All my favorite things on one wine glass of heaven.

GUESS WHO ELSE IS COMING TO WINE FEST? With her own bLyss Designs glass?

DANA!

My college partner in crime. I can’t wait to REALLY introduce her to Virginia Beach and all my loves here.

And Lisa-Marie will be sporting a new glass at Wine Fest too! She requested I make this baby to match the dress she bought for the event.

let me see ya PEACOCK!

The whole time I painted this baby, I had Katy Perry’s song “Peacock” running through my head. It’s inappropriate. I may have sung it out loud. Sorry, Bethany.

My good friend Katie introduced me to this gem of a song. And just for you, Katie, I’ll include a live video of her performing this on Letterman.

Who agrees that little number should be my Halloween costume for next year?

“KEEN-WA?”

I may have hit up Trader Joe’s a few weeks ago on my way home from work.

There may have been a cheap wine purchase involved.

Does it make it okay if I bought other things, too?

spanish wine is good wine.

And, because Carrie’s vegan guest post made me curious…

it never hurts to try new things.

Trader Joes domination

Okay, Okay. Should I be embarrassed that for a really, really long time (okay, my whole life up until I bought this package about a month ago) I’ve always said “Kin-oh-wa?”

I have yet to try this baby. I think I was too put off by the fact that I’ve been saying it wrong for so long.

So, if you’ve got some genius “KEEN-WA” recipes, hit me with ’em.‘Cause if I’ve got a good plan up my sleeve, I’ll get some motivation to try it out on my own.

and I bought these guys, too. cause I love them.

And just WAIT till you hear my exciting Chobani news. In short, the company is awesome, and I finally have the opportunity to try the elusive lemon flavored Greek yogurt. Ah yeah! A full update is soon to come…

It’s a rain boots day.

I finally put my Sperry rain boots to good use in the dreary Virginia Beach weather today. Although I was excited to utilize these babies, I’m not thanking Mother Nature for the pouring rain. I was supposed to do a nice outdoor run with my buddy Robby today. And finally purchase new running shoes.

I swear I’m not joking when I say every time I’ve planned to go get the darned shoes something happens beyond my control to nix the plans. It’ll happen… eventually.

In the world of bLyss Designs

I love when a brand new design is requested for me to paint. Jenna, my little-sister-that-I-never-had, asked me to make this beaut for her friend Jess’ birthday.

peace signs!

I’m currently working on some Ohio State Nursing glasses, a “camping” glass (thanks, Whitney, for giving me a serious challenge) ;), a Ravens glass, and an Animal Nurse glass.

DIY Hair Help Needed

I get by with a little help from my friends.

There’s a gift I was not blessed with.

It’s the gift of hair styling.

As evidenced by my numerous pictures with my hair down, and the fact that whenever I’m getting fancy I have a friend tackle my locks (like in the picture of Jen doing my hair above), I’m pretty challenged when it comes to fancy shmancy hair. And, since I’m attending a formal this weekend, I need some nice tips.

getting my hair to do THIS is a feat.

I own rollers, but my hair doesn’t hold a curl. I’ve got a lotta hair, so putting everything up with bobby pins will take a while, but it’s doable. I want some ideas from you guys that will look nice with this dress.

…’Cause I may resort to just wearing it down and straight. πŸ˜‰

Repping Catawba

How FUN is this? One of my best friends from college, Dana, is now an admissions counselor for our alma mater. She sent this little jitty to me last week to show me I’m on a “Campus to Campus Day” brochure.

hey, that's me!

Dear Alyssa, go get lessons on how to “cheese” in a socially acceptable manner.

I guess they liked it because I look SO HAPPY to be a Catawba student. πŸ˜‰

Got any Quinoa recipes? Give ’em to me!

Got some hair tips? I want those, too!

Ever been in a publication for your school? It took 5 years, but I got in!

CAAAAAKKKEEEE!

I get to play Wedding Planner Helper Lady/Paparazzi with my friend Lisa-Marie, and I love every second of it. Didja know my original career plan was to be a wedding planner? πŸ˜‰

Her wedding is coming up FAST, so we got down and dirty on the planning this weekend!

“CAaAaAkKKKEEeeEEE”

Does this picture remind anyone else of one of my favorite posts on Hyperbole And a Half?

she is a genius.

Anyway, Lisa-Marie and I had a blasty blast trying and testing different kinds of cake, cake fillings, cake frostings, and cake icings. CAAAAKKKKEEEE!

The first place we visited was Bliss Bakery. I know, they went to be just like me. But they spelled it wrong. Their cake was yummy, and their design proposal sounded pretty great, but we were anxious to compare our experience to the next place: La Chocolatier.

This place kinda blew Bliss Bakery out of the water (which I hate to say, since Bliss had such a great name, and all…). From our first bites of cake, Lisa-Marie and I looked and each other, eyes wide, knowingΒ this would be the winner.

even the presentation blew us away.

At La Chocolatier, LM got to pick out her cake, filling, and frosting flavors pre-consultation. Let’s just say her choices didn’t disappoint… especially the dark chocolate almond and the red velvet!

The final cake design is perfect and goes with LM and Seth’s wedding theme and colors perfectly.

Let’s just say… I’ll probably be first in line for cake at this wedding. πŸ˜‰

**Note: if anyone in the Virginia Beach area knows someone who needs an apartment in the Chesapeake area near Regent, Lisa-Marie is trying moving out of her apartment A.S.A.P. and looking for a sub-letter. Puh-lease spread the word and let me know if you’re interested!

And guess what else I finished this weekend that was cake-related?

Katie‘s bLyss Designs giveaway-winner shot glass!

Katie asked for her name and a cupcake, so I went with a theme that kinda matched her bloggity blog. This baby will be shipped out to her this week so she can enjoy lots of goodies from it ASAP. πŸ˜‰

raspberry + chocolate = a winning combination

And to top off a productive weekend, I enjoyed a nice raspberry chocolate pudding smoothie.

How do you make it pudding-like? Add too much xanthan gum! πŸ˜‰

To make this baby, add the following to the blender:

  • 10 frozen raspberries
  • 1 scoop chocolate truffle protein powder (I use Nectar Whey Protein Isolate)
  • 5 ice cubes
  • 3 pinches xanthan gum (for thickening… use less if you want it less pudding-like)
  • a big fat squirt of sugar-free chocolate syrup
  • 1 packet of Splenda (if you like super sweet things like I do)

choco-raspberry-licious

And voila. A pretty chocolate raspberry protein pudding smoothie. Serve in a martini glass like me if you’re feeling saucy.

I’m looking forward to a week full of training (yep.. our next half marathon is less than a month away already!) with a running club and a friend movie night. Hoooo-rah!

Have you ever been wedding cake tasting? What was your all-time fave?

What’s your take on running clubs? I’m overly excited to try this one in Norfolk.

Training is OVER.

bring it, Shamrock!

Duh, duh duuuh! We’re officially three days out till the Yuengling Shamrock Half Marathon, and let me say, it felt great to be officially done with training yesterday.

To celebrate after my 3-mile baby run, I made myself a delicious (and gross looking, I know) Green Monster Protein Chocolate Shamrock Shake.

always delicious. always disgusting looking.

Into the blender went:

  • 1 scoop Vanilla Aria protein powder
  • 4(ish) tbsp Edy’s Vanilla Fat Free Yogurt Blend ice cream
  • 1 laaarge handful spinach
  • 1/2 cup Light Vanilla Silk (my new obsession)
  • a big squirt of sugar free chocolate syrup, Walmart brand
  • a teeensy drop of peppermint extract (go easy, or it’ll taste like toothpaste. been there.)
  • a drop of vanilla extract
  • a pinch of Bob’s Redmill Xanthan Gum (for thickening)
  • 6 Β small ice cubes

It was creamy, chocolatey, minty, and delicious. Gimme that protein!

(I didn’t intend to make this a chocolate Shamrock Shake. It just kinda happened that way when the final product was… “missing something.”

The Shin Story

Today will be a nice upper body workout, but other than that, resting up for Sunday’s half is on the agenda for this girl. Especially because my shins are still really sore.

You all remember my shin stretching video from last week. I swear, those sassy taps along with ice really do the trick for my sore shinskies. However, I’m pretty sure I need to regulate just when I decide to do these sassy taps in public.

Scene 1: Alyssa is patiently waiting for a treadmill at the gym. Commence sassy taps, purely for shin-stretching purposes. Alyssa looks like impatient brat.

Scene 2: Alyssa is patiently waiting in line for lunch. Shins feel tight. Commence slightly stealthy sassy taps. Alyssa once again looks like an impatient jerk (“I mean, really. Who taps their foot in the lunch line?”).

Sorry, general public. I’ve got a half coming up, and I need to get these shins in gear. I’m just gonna sassily tap until they feel better. Judge if you must.

The bLyss Designs Page is up!

Did ya’ll notice I finally finished the “Best of bLyss Designs” page? Click the link at the top of the navigation bar. I posted some pictures of some of my recent orders I remembered to snap. I need to get better at capturing these glasses, cause I’m having lots of fun painting all these unique designs I’m getting!

And the giveaway goes to…

KATIE!

Hopefully, pretty Katie can make up her mind, because she just won a personalized hand painted shot glass from bLyss Designs. πŸ™‚ Yay for Katie!

I’m so glad she just found my blog, because I, in turn, found hers, and I’ll be making her COOKIE CUPCAKES very, very soon. Like maybe tonight.

Katie: hit me up, and we’ll figure out a cupcake Katie shot glass design? πŸ™‚

Comment News

And, last but not least, I mentioned in my last post how I can’t figure out how to send automatic reply e-mails to those whose comments I reply to. I learned it’s a plug-in you must use, but apparently, you can’t install this plug-in unless you are self hosted, because WordPress.com doesn’t allow plug-ins. Waaah!

that's my "comment replies don't get e-mail updates" sad face.

If anyone knows of a way I can do this fo free, I’d love to know. Enlighten me.

What’s on your fridge? Anything good?

Have you won a giveaway yet? I’m psyched I FINALLY won something! πŸ˜€

Have you tried the sassy tap shin stretch yet?

See ya on the flip side. In the meantime, I’ll be sassy tappin’ and foam rolling my way to Sunday.
